“In an ideal world, all bands would make exciting, exotic sounds, consistently striving to make something both beautiful and weird. Of course, this world is far from perfect, but we can at least cling to the pockets of warmth that we are given. So, whilst the harsh winds of guitar driven indie pop still rock the fort, it’s best to cozy up alongside the bizarre delights of California’s Stay Cool Forever. The work of three (or four, depending on what you believe) people from Pomona, they specialise in overlapping melodies and hazy pop and serve as a gentle reminder that not everything is terrible.
Their songs are delivered wit a warm hiss, dreamlike it’s it’s simple complexity. There are layers upon layers running throughout, with spiky guitar and vocals interweaving to create a grand, almost psychedelic tapestry that relaxes rather than overwhelms. Like the aural equivalent of a magic eye picture, the depth and scale is almost imperceptible, yet it’s lavish whilst still being warped. If Bradford Cox calmed down a bit and started trying to make songs for parties, there’s a chance that he’d use this as a blueprint – a joyous celebration that still subverts and surprises.” – The Pigeon Post
